European bird protection areas have been established to ensure the long-term survival of vulnerable bird species. Also special protection for migratory birds on their resting and wintering grounds is an important criterion for the inclusion of bird sanctuaries.
In Germany 740 European bird sanctuaries are currently reported. Considering only the terrestrial bird sanctuaries they correspond to an area ratio of about 11%. In Brandenburg, there are 27 European bird protection areas. One of these is the EU Bird sanctuary Schorfheide -Chorin (EU-Vogelschutzgebiet Schorfheide-Chorin).
