Completed hydraulic-engineering actions between Greiffenberg and Bruchhagen

Great progress has been made in the project area Sernitz this winter! Between Bahnhofsstraße and Zolldamm as well as between Zolldamm and Bruchhagen restoration actions have been realized successfully. Within three weeks construction companies accomplished the closing of many old ditches. These ditches have been built during the 1970s with the aim of intensifying the land utilization in the peatland. But just shortly thereafter, using the land there stopped and the area has been taken over by reed and wood succession.
The target of the actions is to hold the water of several underground springs and to ensure stable water levels throughout the whole year. That is the only way to protect peatlands from draining.
To protect this beautiful spring mire it was necessary to remove vegetation rich in nutrients such as elders. Then, to avoid further drainage of the fen, draining pipes got taken out and trenches filled. For the latter the peatland area next to the trenches underwent a top soil removal from 30cm. With this method, the obtained fen-own material could be used to close ditches. Consequently, the drainage is prevented and the water stays in the surface area.
